Abstract

Carbon Capture and Storage (CCS) projects require secure, long-term containment of CO₂ in suitable geological formations, which depends on plume behavior, pressure dynamics, and trapping mechanisms. This study evaluates CO₂ storage feasibility of 51.5 megatonnes (MT) in the Arbuckle Group within Osage Nation and Kay County, Northeast Oklahoma. Using a subsurface geological model and historical field data from saltwater disposal and hydrocarbon production, we developed and calibrated a pressure model with real-time monitoring data. Integrated geological and pressure models were applied in reservoir simulations to assess CO₂ injection scenarios with varying perforation depths across the Arbuckle over 1000 years. Results indicate that injection confined to the lower Arbuckle interval ensures plume containment, whereas upper-interval injection increases the risk of caprock penetration. Long-term security relies on multiple trapping mechanisms: approximately 40% from residual and mineral trapping and 60% from solubility, structural-stratigraphic trapping and caprock integrity. Mineralization accounts for ∼8% of injected CO₂ over millennial timescales, primarily through anorthite dissolution and precipitation of calcite and dolomite. This study relies on limited sites specific data, including sparse core measurements, analog-derived flow and geochemical properties, coarse grid resolution, and default CMG parameters, making predictions of plume evolution, trapping efficiency, and caprock behavior preliminary. Thus, additional assessments require further validation with higher resolution data and sensitivity analyses. Overall, though, our findings underscore the importance of injection depth, caprock integrity, and pressure management in CCS site selection and design.

Biographical Sketch

Dr. Benmadi Milad is a Geostorage Specialist and Energy Team Lead at the Oklahoma Geological Survey (OGS) and Adjunct Faculty at the University of Oklahoma (OU). His research focuses on subsurface energy resources, geological carbon storage, underground hydrogen storage, and emerging energy technologies, integrating geoscience and engineering to support energy solutions.

Dr. Milad serves as Co-Principal Investigator of the Oklahoma Carbon Hub (OKHUB), a CarbonSAFE project currently under negotiation to evaluate large-scale CO₂ storage opportunities in Oklahoma. He works with multidisciplinary teams from academia, government, national laboratories, and industry on reservoir characterization and modeling for carbon storage deployment.

His expertise includes geological and reservoir modeling, petrophysics, reservoir characterization, numerical simulation, fluid-rock interactions, geological carbon storage, and underground hydrogen storage. Prior to joining OGS, he worked as a Senior Production Engineer at Eni and later as a Postdoctoral Research Associate at the University of Oklahoma, where he conducted research, taught petroleum engineering courses, and mentored students.

Drawing on experience across industry, academia, and applied geoscience research, Dr. Milad advances collaborative and innovative approaches to subsurface energy development and storage.

 Background and Significance

For more than a century, the Arbuckle-Simpson (Cambro-Ordovician) and “Vamoosa Group” (Late Carboniferous) bedrock aquifers in Oklahoma have supported regional growth by supplying water to rural residents and larger communities, including Tulsa. Over the same period, the petroleum industry has extracted, stored, transported, and refined billions of barrels of oil and gas equivalent from formations beneath and adjacent to these aquifers. Together, these water and energy systems extend from the East Davis and Fitts “Pool” oil fields in the south northward through the Seminole-Cushing Uplift into Osage County.

Course Focus and Approach: Surface to Basement Integration

Automated computing workflows have improved understanding of connected pore systems. In this course, participants will examine outcrops and subsurface sites tied to aquifer evaluation and oil field pressure maintenance while discussing geologic scale and reservoir connectivity. Exercises will use remote sensing data from the Arbuckle-Simpson Uplift, borehole cross-sections, 3D frameworks, and a Virgilian aquifer geologic model developed in SLB’s Petrel software.
